On a September evening in 2014, 21-year-old Jarome Leroy Coker, an African American male known to his friends and family as 'Fat Money' or 'Fat$', returned to his home on Thon Drive in Penn Hills, a suburb of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. As he was getting out of his car and walking toward his house around 8:30 p.m., the quiet of the neighborhood was shattered by a barrage of gunfire.
