When the echoes faded, 23-year-old John Scaine, a Black male from the nearby community of Braddock, was left lying on the pavement, critically wounded. The shooting occurred outdoors, near the intersection of North Lang Avenue and Upland Street. Emergency services were dispatched at 7:16 p.m., and Scaine was rushed to UPMC Presbyterian Hospital.
Despite the efforts of medical staff, he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at 7:52 p.m.
An autopsy later confirmed that John Scaine's life was taken by multiple gunshot wounds to his head, neck, and extremities. The Allegheny County Medical Examiner's Office officially ruled his death a homicide.
