On a Tuesday evening in March 2015, a burst of gunfire shattered the quiet of the Homewood neighborhood in Pittsburgh. When the echoes faded, 23-year-old John Scaine, a Black male from the nearby community of Braddock, was left lying on the pavement, critically wounded. The shooting occurred outdoors, near the intersection of North Lang Avenue and Upland Street. Emergency services were dispatched at 7:16 p.m., and Scaine was rushed to UPMC Presbyterian Hospital.
