Investigators pursued numerous leads over the years, but a suspect remained elusive. Male DNA had been collected from the scene, a crucial piece of evidence that held the promise of one day bringing her killer to justice. As DNA technology advanced, the sample was entered into the CODIS system in the early 2000s, but no match was found, and the case remained unsolved, leaving a void in the lives of her loved ones.
Nearly forty years after her brutal murder, a breakthrough finally emerged from the silence of the cold case. In March 2022, the Livingston County Cold Case Team, with the help of a grant, sent the preserved DNA evidence to a private forensic lab for advanced genealogical testing. This cutting-edge technology produced a lead that pointed to a man named Charles David Shaw. Further investigation and familial DNA comparisons confirmed that Shaw was the man responsible for Christina's death.
The resolution of the case, however, was bittersweet. Charles David Shaw had died in November of 1983, just months after he had taken Christina's life, and therefore would never face a court of law for his crime. Investigators could not find any direct connection between Shaw and Christina, but they learned he had lived less than five miles from where she went missing. Described by his relatives as a troubled individual, Shaw had a prior criminal history, including an arrest for the attempted abduction of another woman in 1981.
