In a tragic turn of events that unfolded on February 19, 2023, Maria Martin, a 22-year-old female Detroit Police Officer, lost her life in what authorities have described as a murder-suicide. The incident took place inside a residence in Livonia, Michigan, where Martin was discovered with multiple gunshot wounds.
Responding to a request for a welfare check at approximately 12:30 p.m. in the 16000 block of Farmington Road, Livonia police officers made the grim discovery.
Inside the home, they found the bodies of both Maria Martin and a fellow Detroit Police Officer, 26-year-old Matthew Ethington II. An unharmed infant was also found at the scene and was safely placed in the care of a family member.
The investigation conducted by the Livonia Police Department concluded that Ethington shot and killed Martin before taking his own life with a single, self-inflicted gunshot wound.
