In the afternoon of December 30, 2015, a dispute on a West Philadelphia street escalated into a fatal encounter for Seth Fassett. The 57-year-old White/Caucasian man was shot and killed in the 1200 block of North Redfield Street. Police responded to a report of a shooting at approximately 2:13 p.m. and discovered Fassett lying on the sidewalk with a gunshot wound to his chest.
He was rushed to Presbyterian Hospital, where he was pronounced dead shortly after his arrival.
An investigation into the shooting revealed that Fassett had been involved in an argument that turned into a physical altercation. In the days following the incident, authorities identified Malcolm William, a 39-year-old man from the same block where the shooting occurred, as the suspect. Investigators determined that after the fight, William fled the scene in a minivan.
On January 6, 2016, Malcolm William surrendered to the police. He was subsequently charged with murder, as well as firearm charges and other related offenses, for his alleged role in Seth Fassett's death. Records indicated that William had 18 prior arrests for various offenses, including those related to drugs and weapons. A celebration of Seth Fassett's life was held on January 9, 2016, at the Sharon Baptist Church in Philadelphia, followed by his interment at Fernwood Cemetery.
