In the late summer of 2016, a shadow of fear loomed over the life of 50-year-old Susan Kay Hoke, a resident of York, Pennsylvania. Despite her efforts to protect herself, her life was tragically cut short in a harrowing act of violence that exposed the very real dangers of domestic abuse and the potential failings of the systems designed to prevent such outcomes.
For some time, Susan had been living in fear of her estranged husband, Scott Hoke.
The situation had escalated to the point where she had taken measures to secure her home in Jackson Township, changing locks and security codes. She had confided in her children about her fears and had turned to the legal system for protection. In the months leading up to her death, Susan had sought and obtained a protection-from-abuse order against Scott. He had also faced criminal charges, including one for simple assault after an incident where he allegedly pulled her by the hair and attempted to slam her head into a picnic table. He had pleaded guilty to a lesser charge in that case and was sentenced to probation.
Despite these legal interventions, Scott Hoke remained a threat. On the morning of September 12, 2016, as Susan was preparing to leave for her job at Hanover Foods, her estranged husband appeared at her home. Her 17-year-old daughter, who was upstairs at the time, heard terrifying screams that she had never heard before. The scene that awaited law enforcement was a grim one. Both Susan and Scott Hoke, who was 42 years old, were found deceased inside the residence.
The investigation determined that Scott Hoke had shot and killed Susan before turning the gun on himself in a murder-suicide. The handgun was reportedly still in his possession when their bodies were discovered. This violent end came despite laws that should have prevented him from having a firearm due to the domestic violence conviction. The tragic event left Susan's family, including her three children, heartbroken and questioning the system that was supposed to have kept her safe. Her son later recounted that he had even asked his mother if she wanted him to take matters into his own hands, but she had insisted they let the legal system handle it. The case stands as a somber reminder of the devastating consequences of domestic violence.
