In the summer of 2017, a young man's life was tragically cut short in what was described as a senseless act of recklessness. John William Roberts III, a 21-year-old male, was at a friend's house in the Lincoln Place neighborhood of Pittsburgh on the evening of July 22nd. He was in the basement with his friend, 21-year-old Jakeub Nace, when a playful moment turned fatal. The two were reportedly imitating a video game when Nace picked up an assault-style rifle that was left in a pile of clothes.
Believing the firearm to be unloaded, he pointed it at Roberts and pulled the trigger.
A single shot rang out, striking Roberts in the chest. The immediate aftermath was one of panic and regret. Nace, realizing the gravity of his actions, dropped the weapon and rushed to his friend's aid. He instructed another friend to call 911 while he dragged the gravely injured Roberts to the driveway to be closer to the street when help arrived. He then administered CPR in a desperate attempt to save his friend's life. When police and paramedics arrived, they found Roberts in the driveway, and he was quickly transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.
The initial investigation suggested an accidental shooting, a tragic mistake between friends. However, after consulting with the District Attorney's office, Pittsburgh Police arrested Jakeub Nace and charged him with criminal homicide. This decision was met with conflicting emotions. While Nace maintained that the shooting was an accident and that Roberts was like a brother to him, the victim's mother expressed her disbelief and pain, stating that pointing a gun at someone, loaded or not, is a heartless act.
Ultimately, the charge of criminal homicide against Jakeub Nace was dismissed. In January 2018, he pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter, recklessly endangering another person, and a firearms violation. During the sentencing, the court heard emotional victim impact statements from Roberts' family, who spoke of their profound loss. Nace was sentenced to serve five to ten years in prison, followed by five years of probation for the thoughtless act that ended the life of his friend.
