In the winter of 2022, a young man's life was cut tragically short in Pittsburgh's Allentown neighborhood. Joshua Brian Hamilton, a 19-year-old male, was fatally shot on the night of Thursday, January 20, 2022. Remembered as a kind and caring individual, Hamilton was actively involved in his community, volunteering at food banks and even registering as an organ donor. He was a talented piano player and enjoyed skateboarding.
At the time of his death, he was working at a Family Dollar and also in construction.
On that fateful evening, police were dispatched to a residence on Loyal Way shortly after 10 p.m. following a report of a shooting. Upon arrival, they discovered Joshua Hamilton in the kitchen with gunshot wounds to his neck and arm. Multiple firearms, including a rifle, a shotgun, and a semiautomatic pistol, were found at the scene. Despite the initial claims of an accidental shooting, the Allegheny County Medical Examiner's Office officially ruled Hamilton's death a homicide. A pathologist determined that the nature of his wounds made it impossible for him to have inflicted the fatal shot himself.
In the wake of the incident, another 19-year-old, James Linnert from Pittsburgh's St. Clair neighborhood, was arrested and charged with criminal homicide. A witness at the scene reported hearing the two men arguing before a loud bang. According to the witness, Linnert claimed that Hamilton had pointed a shotgun at him and that the gun discharged accidentally when he pushed it away. However, the forensic evidence contradicted this account. The witness also informed police that the men had brought guns to the house with the intention of going to a shooting range. Linnert was taken into custody at the scene.
