In the early morning hours of November 25, 2017, the life of 14-year-old Augustus C. Gray was tragically cut short in Pittsburgh's Lincoln-Lemington-Belmar neighborhood. Augustus, an African-American male from Braddock and a student in the Woodland Hills School District, was discovered lying in the middle of Paulson Avenue with a gunshot wound to his head. Police were alerted to the scene around 6 a.m. by a ShotSpotter notification.
The young teen was rushed to UPMC Presbyterian in critical condition, but tragically succumbed to his injuries about 11 hours later. His death was officially ruled a homicide.
For more than a year, the investigation into Augustus Gray's murder continued, a period of agonizing uncertainty for his grieving family and community. The initial stages of the investigation proved challenging, with authorities struggling to identify witnesses or a suspect. The Woodland Hills School District was particularly shaken, as another student was fatally shot just days after Augustus's death, prompting a moment of silence and an outpouring of grief from the school community.
A significant breakthrough in the case came in January 2019, when the Western Pennsylvania Fugitive Task Force made two arrests. Tremayne Wilmer, a 47-year-old man from Verona, was taken into custody and charged with criminal homicide in the shooting death of Augustus Gray. Simultaneously, Wilmer's 33-year-old girlfriend, Nehlah Stubblefield, also from Verona, was arrested and faced charges of perjury and false swearing in connection with the investigation. Both individuals were subsequently booked into the Allegheny County Jail, marking a pivotal development in the long road toward justice for Augustus.
