In the early morning hours of February 28, 2018, a confrontation at a 24-hour gas station on Airport Road in Allentown, Pennsylvania, escalated into a fatal gun battle, claiming the life of 28-year-old Cassieam Hicks, a Black/African American male. Hicks was one of two men who lost their lives in the shootout, which erupted shortly after 1 a.m. The other victim was identified as 36-year-old Danny Daniels Cancel of Bethlehem.
Both men died from gunshot wounds, and their deaths were officially ruled as homicides by the Lehigh County coroner's office.
The incident unfolded near a car at the gas station, which is part of a larger shopping center. Authorities were called to the scene where they discovered one of the victims deceased. The second victim was rushed to a nearby hospital but succumbed to his injuries. A third individual, later identified as 24-year-old Kareem Sanders, was transported to a hospital in a private vehicle with a gunshot wound and was listed in critical condition. Police were able to retrieve surveillance footage from the gas station, which captured the events leading up to the deadly exchange of gunfire.
Following an investigation into the fatal shooting, Kareem Sanders was arrested and faced charges of criminal homicide and a weapons crime for his involvement in the deaths of Hicks and Cancel. The case proceeded to trial, where witness testimony was presented to detail the circumstances of the incident.
