In the winter of 2018, the life of 20-year-old Omar Daveón Harris was tragically cut short in a burst of gunfire on a Reading, Pennsylvania street. On the evening of December 12th, Harris, along with two other young men, 19-year-old Joel Cintron and 18-year-old Marli Alonso, were fatally shot on Moss Street in what would become a grim triple homicide case for the city. When police arrived at the scene, they found a chaotic and tragic sight.
Two of the young men were already deceased, and Harris was gravely wounded. He was rushed to Reading Hospital, but tragically succumbed to his injuries the following day, on December 13, 2018.
The investigation into the brutal slayings led authorities to identify several suspects. Nearly three years after the incident, in September 2021, a significant breakthrough was made with the arrest of Jairo Guerrero-Bautista, then 19 years old. He was charged with three counts of first-degree murder and criminal conspiracy, among other offenses, for his role in the deaths of Harris, Cintron, and Alonso. Prosecutors would later reveal that Guerrero-Bautista had conspired with another man, Jonathan Torres, and two other unidentified individuals to carry out the planned attack on the three victims.
The road to justice was a lengthy one, but in March 2024, a Berks County jury found Jairo Guerrero-Bautista guilty on all counts of first-degree murder and conspiracy. Given that he was a minor at the time of the offense, the sentencing guidelines were a consideration in his punishment. In April 2024, Guerrero-Bautista was sentenced to a term of 140 years to life in prison, a significant sentence that reflected the gravity of the crime. The resolution of the court case brought a measure of closure to the families of the victims, though the loss of three young lives remains a stark tragedy. While one of the perpetrators is now behind bars for the foreseeable future, the involvement of other suspects, including Jonathan Torres, remains a part of the ongoing legal narrative surrounding the violent deaths of Omar Harris and his friends.
