In the early morning hours of December 23, 2018, the life of 23-year-old Shanon Williams, a Black male from McKeesport, Pennsylvania, was tragically cut short in the Homewood-Brushton neighborhood of Pittsburgh. At approximately 1:30 a.m., the sound of multiple gunshots pierced the quiet near the intersection of North Lang Avenue and Felicia Way, triggering the city's ShotSpotter gunshot detection system.
Pittsburgh Police officers were dispatched to the scene, where they discovered
Williams suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Despite the immediate response from law enforcement and medics, his injuries proved to be fatal, and he was pronounced dead at the scene. The sudden violence left the community in shock, particularly during the holiday season. One neighbor, reflecting on the tragedy, remarked on the sadness of seeing a young man, someone's son and brother, lying on the ground.
The investigation into Williams's death progressed over the following weeks. On January 15, 2019, the Pittsburgh Police announced an arrest in the case. Tyus Starke, a 26-year-old man also from McKeesport, was taken into custody and charged with homicide in connection with the fatal shooting of Shanon Williams. At the time of Starke's arrest, authorities did not release any information regarding a possible motive for the killing.
