On a tragic January evening in 2020, 33-year-old Michael Coover Jr., a male resident of Brackenridge, Pennsylvania, was fatally shot while he was at a townhouse in the neighboring community of Arnold. The incident, which cut short a life remembered for a big heart and a beautiful smile, was the culmination of a period of escalating animosity, tragically played out through a series of threatening text messages exchanged between Coover and his assailant.
The man responsible for Coover's death was identified as Mario Gatti of New Kensington. On the day of the shooting, Gatti drove to an alley in Arnold, entered the townhouse where Coover was present, and shot the unarmed man. The violence of the act was further compounded by the terror inflicted upon others in the home; after shooting Coover, Gatti brandished his weapon at two women who were attempting to shield an infant, threatening to kill them as well. Coover sustained two gunshot wounds, one to his arm and a fatal one to his chest that pierced a lung and his spine.
In the immediate aftermath, law enforcement identified Mario Gatti as the suspect and a warrant was issued for his arrest on a charge of criminal homicide. He was considered armed and dangerous and remained at large for a period before being apprehended. Following his capture, Gatti was extradited from Florida to Westmoreland County to face justice.

His trial concluded in October 2022 with a jury finding him guilty of first-degree murder after five hours of deliberation. The defense's argument of self-defense was ultimately rejected by the jury.
