Anthony Ritchie, a 24-year-old man from Vandergrift, PA, was fatally shot in the parking lot of a convenience store in New Kensington on the night of November 6, 2015. Ritchie was found lying in the parking lot of the BP Fueland store on Seventh Street after police heard multiple gunshots. He was rushed to Allegheny Valley Hospital but was pronounced dead upon arrival.
Devon Michael Bayne, a 23-year-old man from Camp Avenue, was arrested and charged with Ritchie's murder, robbery, and
illegal gun possession. Bayne was arraigned and denied bail, being taken to Westmoreland County Prison. During the investigation, it was revealed that Bayne had a prior conviction for burglary and robbery in 2010 and was on probation at the time of the shooting.
The case went to trial, and after three days of testimony and four hours of deliberation, a jury acquitted Bayne of first-degree murder, third-degree murder, robbery, and a firearms offense on July 13, 2017. The defense argued that the prosecution's key eyewitness was unreliable and suggested that the witness himself might have been the shooter. The prosecution contended that Bayne had a motive to kill Ritchie, possibly related to drugs found on Ritchie's person.
Despite the acquittal, the case remains a tragic event for Ritchie's family and friends, who continue to seek justice and closure. The investigation and subsequent legal proceedings highlighted the complexities and challenges of prosecuting such cases, leaving many questions unanswered and the community searching for answers.
