On the morning of December 21, 2023, David "Mogie" Magill, a 64-year-old resident of Lower Burrell, Pennsylvania, was fatally shot outside his establishment, Mogie's Irish Pub, located at the intersection of Leechburg and Wildlife Lodge roads. A patrol officer monitoring traffic near the adjacent Bon Air Elementary School heard gunshots around 9:08 a.m. and discovered Magill with a gunshot wound to his torso. Despite immediate medical attention, Magill was pronounced dead at Allegheny Valley Hospital in Harrison.
Shortly after the incident, Nathan Salem, a 45-year-old resident of Lower Burrell, arrived at the Lower Burrell City Hall, approximately a mile from the crime scene, and confessed to the shooting. Salem reportedly stated, "I shot him," upon surrendering to authorities. He informed officers about two firearms in his vehicle, both loaded with expanding rounds capable of penetrating ballistic vests. Salem was subsequently arrested and charged with first-degree murder and criminal homicide. A preliminary hearing was scheduled for January 3, 2024.
Investigators found multiple bullet holes in the driver's side of Magill's vehicle and at least one bullet that penetrated a window of the pub, lodging in an interior wall. The motive behind the shooting remains unclear, as authorities have not disclosed any known relationship between Magill and Salem. During a court appearance on February 14, 2024, it was alleged that Salem believed Magill was involved in illicit activities; however, prosecutors emphasized that there was no evidence supporting these claims.
Magill was a prominent figure in the Lower Burrell community, known for his unwavering support of local law enforcement and charitable endeavors. He regularly hosted fundraisers at his pub for the Officer Brian Shaw Foundation, honoring the New Kensington police officer killed in the line of duty in 2017. Magill's contributions extended to various community events and youth organizations, reflecting his deep commitment to the area.
The tragic loss of David Magill elicited an outpouring of grief and solidarity from the community. Hundreds attended a candlelight vigil held near his pub, where friends, family, and patrons remembered him as a generous and compassionate individual who consistently prioritized the well-being of others.
