In the evening chill of a Philadelphia January, a burst of gunfire shattered the ordinary atmosphere of a Target parking lot, leaving a young man's life extinguished and a community in shock. Daykwan Carter, a 25-year-old male, was discovered inside a white Jeep Grand Cherokee, having sustained a fatal gunshot wound to the head on the night of Tuesday, January 21, 2020.
The engine of the vehicle was still running when police arrived at the scene in the Wynnefield Heights section of the city.
The incident, which unfolded shortly before 9 p.m. outside the store on City Avenue, also left two other men, aged 23 and 31, with gunshot wounds. These two individuals managed to run into the Target for help and were subsequently transported to a local medical center in stable condition. Investigators at the scene discovered several large bags of what appeared to be marijuana and a handgun inside the Jeep where Carter was found, leading them to believe the shooting may have been the result of a drug deal that turned violent. Another handgun was found on the ground outside the vehicle.
A second white Jeep, which had crashed into a parked car nearby, was also part of the crime scene. Police suspected the two surviving men may have been in that vehicle. At the time of the initial investigation, authorities were reviewing security camera footage from the Target parking lot in an effort to piece together the events of that tragic night.
Despite the initial investigation and the leads available at the scene, online sources in the years following the incident have not provided any updates regarding arrests made or suspects identified in the death of Daykwan Carter. The case, which was one of over 30 homicides in Philadelphia in the first month of 2020, left a family, including Carter's then 8-year-old daughter, to grapple with a sudden and violent loss.
