In the heart of a North Philadelphia neighborhood, a bright and ambitious 19-year-old woman's life was tragically cut short in a senseless act of gun violence. Yaniyah Foster, a recent graduate of Ben Franklin High School with dreams of pursuing a career in law or criminal justice to effect positive change in her community, was fatally shot on the front steps of her home on the 1000 block of West Thompson Street. Known to her loved ones as 'Niyah,' she was remembered for her bubbly, outgoing personality and a smile that could light up a room. At the time of her death, she was working at the Kanella Grill in Center City and had aspirations of starting her own clothing line.
On the afternoon of Wednesday, February 19, 2020, Foster was sitting with friends on her stoop when gunfire erupted. Surveillance video captured two individuals walking down a nearby street before turning onto Thompson Street and immediately opening fire on the group gathered outside Foster's home. In the hail of more than two dozen bullets, Foster was struck in the head. Three other men were also wounded in the shooting. Rushed to Temple University Hospital, Yaniyah Foster succumbed to her injuries hours later.
The investigation into the quadruple shooting moved swiftly, and two suspects were apprehended. Charles Davis, 25, and 16-year-old Joel Saint-Fort were arrested and subsequently charged with murder and related offenses in connection with Foster's death. The two arrived at the same hospital as the victims, seeking treatment for an arm injury Davis sustained during the incident. Investigators discovered two guns in their vehicle, which were the same caliber as the bullets found at the crime scene. While arrests were made, a clear motive for the shooting was not immediately released by authorities. The tragic loss of Yaniyah Foster left her family, friends, and community devastated, with her loved ones calling for an end to the senseless violence that took the life of a young woman with a promising future.
