Ryan M. McGovern, a 32-year-old male from Plains Township, was fatally shot in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania on March 4, 2020. The incident occurred on Schuyler Street in what investigators described as a dispute over drugs. Another individual was also shot during the altercation but survived.
The investigation into the shooting led authorities to identify Jeremy Gittens as the primary suspect. A search for Gittens ensued, and he was eventually apprehended in New York. Following his arrest, he was returned to Luzerne County to face charges related to McGovern's death.
In February 2022, Jeremy Gittens pleaded guilty to third-degree murder for his role in the shooting. As a result of his guilty plea, he was sentenced to serve 16 to 32 years in state prison. The resolution of the case in court brought a degree of closure to the violent death of Ryan McGovern.
