In the late afternoon of August 24, 2020, in the Spring Hill neighborhood of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, the life of 1-year-old Zykier Young, a male, was tragically cut short. Inside his home at the Three Rivers Manor apartment complex, the toddler was asleep in his bed when a gunfight erupted outside. A stray bullet from the shootout penetrated a window and two walls of the apartment, striking the young boy in the head. His mother found him bleeding, and responding police officers rushed him to a local hospital, but he was pronounced dead that evening.
The investigation into the senseless shooting led authorities to identify three men involved in the exchange of gunfire: Andre Crawford, Marvin Hill, and Devon Thompson. Surveillance footage from the area proved crucial in identifying the suspects. Within weeks, all three men were in custody. Andre Crawford and Marvin Hill were arrested, and Devon Thompson later turned himself in to the police. All three were initially charged with criminal homicide.
The subsequent legal proceedings revealed a complex series of events that led to the fatal shot. The shootout reportedly began after an argument in the apartment complex's parking lot. In February 2024, Andre Crawford pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter as part of a plea deal and was sentenced to five to 10 years in prison. It was determined that a bullet from Crawford's gun was the one that killed Zykier. The other two men, Marvin Hill and Devon Thompson, also faced charges related to their involvement in the shootout. Following a trial, Marvin Hill was convicted of voluntary manslaughter and received a sentence that was reportedly longer than Crawford's, as prosecutors argued he initiated the chain of events. Devon Thompson also reached a plea agreement for reduced charges in exchange for his testimony.
