On October 16, 2020, Nefertiti Mitchell, a 29-year-old woman from Johnstown, PA, tragically lost her life due to a gunshot wound. The incident occurred near Oakhurst Homes on Daniel Street, where Mitchell was shot in the abdomen. She was immediately transported to Conemaugh Memorial Medical Center, where she underwent surgery but ultimately succumbed to massive blood loss.
The Cambria County Coroner, Jeff Lees, ruled her death a homicide.
Following the incident, Gabrielle Hudson, a 24-year-old woman from Johnstown, was arrested and charged with one count of homicide and two counts of aggravated assault. Court records indicate that bail was denied, and Hudson was held at the Cambria County Prison. In November 2021, Hudson pled guilty to third-degree murder. She was subsequently sentenced to 10 to 20 years in state prison.
The court proceedings revealed that a dispute had erupted between Hudson and Mitchell just before the shooting. Security footage from Oakhurst Homes showed Hudson seeking out Mitchell approximately half an hour before the altercation. During the sentencing, Hudson tearfully apologized to Mitchell's family, claiming she did not intend to shoot Mitchell.

Despite Hudson's difficult background and the support from her probation officer, the court decided on a substantial prison sentence due to the severity of the crime.
