Morgan Braxton, a 25-year-old Black/African American female, was found inside her residence on the 4800 block of North 8th Street in Philadelphia on the morning of April 12, 2021, after relatives had grown worried and reported that they feared for her safety. Police arrived around 10:10 a.m. and found her unresponsive in the dining room area. She had been shot, and medics pronounced her dead at the scene. Later court records placed the shooting earlier, on the morning of April 9, 2021, at 4802 North 8th Street, meaning Morgan had likely been dead for days before police discovered her body.
Investigators connected the killing to Byron McDonald, the father of Morgan's young child. According to the later trial summary, McDonald shot Morgan inside the home, then drove away in her burgundy 2017 Chevrolet Malibu. That same vehicle was later tied to the shooting death of Morgan's mother, Tamara Aikens, outside her home on North Bancroft Street. Surveillance video showed the Malibu pulling up near Aikens's home, the passenger-side window coming down, and shots being fired as Aikens walked up her front steps. She was struck in the back, abdomen, and right arm and later died at Temple University Hospital.
Morgan's disappearance and her son's absence led to an Amber Alert. Police learned that the Malibu was parked near the Aloft Hotel by Philadelphia International Airport and that a room had been rented in the name of McDonald's mother, Teresa Winfrey. SWAT officers and homicide investigators went to the hotel, where McDonald and Winfrey were taken into custody without incident, and Morgan's child was found safe. Investigators later said Winfrey had helped rent the hotel room, and she was also charged with endangering the welfare of a child, conspiracy, and possession with intent to deliver.
The case against McDonald strengthened as detectives gathered ballistics evidence, surveillance video, cell phone location records, and forensic evidence from the vehicle and crime scenes. Cartridge casings found near Morgan's body and inside the Malibu were determined to have been fired from the same gun, and projectiles recovered from Morgan's residence and from Tamara Aikens's home were also linked to the same firearm. McDonald's DNA was found on parts of the Malibu, and cell phone records placed him near Morgan's home on the morning of April 9 before traveling toward Aikens's home around the time she was shot.
On April 22, 2021, after homicide detectives obtained the additional evidence, prosecutors approved murder and related charges against McDonald in the deaths of Morgan Braxton and Tamara Aikens. News reports at the time described the case as a domestic violence tragedy, with family members saying Morgan had feared for her safety. District Attorney Larry Krasner said the case had left Morgan's child without both his mother and grandmother, and prosecutors vowed to hold McDonald accountable.
McDonald later went to a nonjury trial in Philadelphia. In October 2023, he was found guilty of two counts of third-degree murder, two counts of possessing instruments of crime, and firearms offenses, including being a person not to possess a firearm, carrying a firearm without a license, and carrying a firearm on public streets in Philadelphia. On January 8, 2024, he was sentenced to an aggregate term of 40 to 80 years in prison. In 2026, the Pennsylvania Superior Court reviewed his appeal, denied counsel's request to withdraw, vacated the sentence only as it related to an offense for which the trial court had acquitted him, and otherwise affirmed the judgment of sentence.
