In the spring of 2021, just two weeks shy of his high school graduation, 18-year-old Nasir Marks was excitedly preparing for the future. A senior at Overbrook High School in Philadelphia, he had plans to attend Kutztown University in the fall and was even practicing a speech on diversity for his senior project on the evening of May 25th. Described by his family as a quiet and happy young man who avoided confrontation, Nasir was a dedicated student enrolled in the University of Pennsylvania's
Upward Bound college preparatory program and a talented baseball player for his school's team.
Later that evening, after rehearsing his speech, Nasir put on a hoodie and took a bus to visit his girlfriend in West Philadelphia. At 7:15 p.m., he sent her a text to let her know he had arrived. Tragically, only fifteen minutes later, police were called to the 3900 block of Poplar Street, where they found Nasir suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was rushed to Penn Presbyterian Medical Center but succumbed to his injuries that evening. His family believes he may have unknowingly crossed into a territory disputed by rival gangs.
The investigation into the senseless killing of Nasir Marks eventually led to a breakthrough. Authorities determined that his death was a case of mistaken identity, carried out by members of a West Philadelphia gang known as the Young Bag Chasers. Prosecutors identified two individuals, Crawford and Nolan, as the shooters who had tragically mistaken Nasir for a rival gang member. On September 24, 2021, a suspect was arrested in connection with his murder. The case is now considered solved, with the outcome of the trial pending.
