In the early morning hours of Saturday, June 5, 2021, Christine L. Lugo, a 40-year-old Hispanic female, was preparing to open the Dunkin' donut shop she managed on Lehigh Avenue in North Philadelphia. Tragically, it was a morning she would not survive. As she was unlocking the store at approximately 5:30 a.m., a man forced his way inside at gunpoint. The assailant demanded money, and after Lugo complied, he shot her in the head before fleeing the scene.
When police and paramedics arrived, they found Christine in the office and pronounced her deceased.
The brazen and senseless murder of the mother of two sent shockwaves through the community, where she was remembered for her kind heart and smile. A makeshift memorial of flowers and candles quickly grew outside the donut shop as friends, family, and customers mourned her loss. Investigators released surveillance footage showing the suspect, armed with a revolver, forcing Lugo into the store and committing the robbery and murder.
The search for Christine Lugo's killer soon focused on a man named Keith Gibson, who was already on the radar of law enforcement in both Pennsylvania and Delaware. Gibson had been released from a Delaware prison in December 2020 after serving about 13 years for manslaughter. Authorities believe that following his release, he embarked on a violent crime spree.
Gibson was apprehended in Wilmington, Delaware, on June 8, 2021, following the armed robbery of a Rite Aid. At the time of his arrest, he was wearing a ballistic vest and was in possession of a firearm. Investigators began to connect him to a string of violent crimes, including other homicides. In addition to being the primary suspect in the murder of Christine Lugo, Gibson was also accused of killing his own mother, Christine Gibson, in Philadelphia in February 2021. He was further linked to the fatal shooting of two men in a North Philadelphia store in January 2021 and the murder of a T-Mobile store employee in Elsmere, Delaware, in May 2021, as well as another killing in Wilmington around the same time as Lugo's death.
It was decided that Gibson would first face trial in Delaware for the murders committed in that state. In November 2023, a jury convicted him of two counts of murder and other related charges. In March 2024, a Delaware judge sentenced him to seven life sentences plus an additional 296 years in prison.
Following his sentencing in Delaware, the legal process to bring him to justice for his alleged crimes in Pennsylvania began. In September 2024, after a preliminary hearing in which Gibson was reportedly disruptive, a Philadelphia judge ordered him to stand trial for four murders, including that of Christine Lugo. He is currently awaiting trial in Philadelphia, facing the possibility of more life sentences if convicted.
