In the winter of 2022, a bright light in the community of East Mount Airy, Philadelphia, was tragically extinguished. Carissa Bright, a 17-year-old female, was fatally shot on the evening of Friday, January 14th. She was a passenger in a parked white Toyota on the 6500 block of Ross Street when another vehicle, a dark-colored SUV, pulled alongside. At least one individual from the SUV opened fire into the Toyota, striking Carissa.
She was rushed to Chestnut Hill Hospital by a private vehicle but succumbed to her injuries a short time later. Family members described her as a beautiful and energetic person who had aspirations of becoming a nurse.
The investigation into Carissa's death led police to identify a suspect, Damir Richardson. Authorities believed that Carissa was not the intended target of the shooting, but rather her boyfriend who was also in the car at the time. The investigation revealed that several hours after the shooting that claimed Carissa's life, Richardson was allegedly involved in another shooting in Gloucester Township, New Jersey, where he fired at a residence connected to his ex-girlfriend. Ballistic evidence from both scenes was instrumental in connecting him to the crimes.
In July 2022, Damir Richardson was apprehended in California and extradited back to Philadelphia to face charges. In August 2024, a jury found him guilty of first-degree murder and possession of an instrument of a crime in the death of Carissa Bright. Following the conviction, Damir Richardson was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole, bringing a measure of closure to a case that had deeply affected the community and all who knew and loved the vibrant young woman whose future was so senselessly cut short.
