On the night of March 27, 2022, a 28-year-old Black male named Anthony Jamir Santangelo was at a Sunoco gas station on the 5600 block of Ridge Avenue in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, when a hail of gunfire erupted. The violence of that moment left its mark on a gas pump, which was riddled with bullet holes. When Philadelphia Police officers arrived at 10:57 p.m., they did not find Santangelo at the immediate scene of the shooting, but rather in the street on the 400 block of Kingsley Street, a
short distance south of the gas station. A trail of blood had led them to his location.
Despite the swift arrival of medical attention, Anthony Jamir Santangelo was pronounced deceased at 11:50 p.m., having sustained multiple gunshot wounds. Investigators at the scene collected numerous spent shell casings and noted that the victim's vehicle, a rental car with Georgia license plates, was present. The investigation into his death remains open, and as of now, detectives have not publicly identified any suspects or made any arrests in connection with the fatal shooting. The Philadelphia Police Department continues to appeal to the public for any information that might lead to a break in the case.
Tragically, this was not the first time Santangelo had been targeted. Nearly a month prior, on February 21, he had been involved in another shootout on the 400 block of North Front Street. In that incident, his vehicle was struck by at least 15 bullets. Despite being critically wounded, Santangelo managed to drive himself to the Rivers Casino, where he staggered out of his car and was rushed to the hospital by police. He survived that earlier attempt on his life, but the events of that late March night at the gas station proved fatal. No arrests have been reported in the February shooting either, and investigators have not released a motive for why he was the apparent target of two shootings in such a short period.
