Jerry E. Anderson, a 44-year-old White/Caucasian male from McDonald, Pennsylvania, was killed on May 25, 2022, in Smith Township, Washington County, during what authorities and later court proceedings described as the violent end of a long-running neighbor dispute. Anderson was at home on Loffert Road, doing something ordinary and familiar: cutting grass on his riding lawnmower.
The quiet afternoon turned deadly when his neighbor, Bryce Kevin Tacy Sr., confronted him while both men were outside doing yardwork.
Investigators said the dispute between the men had been building for years. Police reports described Tacy as increasingly suspicious of Anderson and other neighbors, with Smith Township police saying he had called them multiple times over several years because he believed Anderson was spying on him. A criminal complaint said Tacy told his son after the shooting that he killed Anderson because he was tired of him, and Tacy's son described him as obsessive and paranoid about his neighbors. Friends of Anderson said he had concerns about Tacy but tried to avoid conflict.
According to police and later court accounts, an argument began while Anderson was on his John Deere riding mower. Tacy pulled out a legally registered firearm and shot Anderson. Prosecutors later said Tacy fired two shots while Anderson was still on the mower, then approached and fired four more. Witnesses saw Anderson slumped over on the lawnmower. Emergency responders could not immediately reach him because Tacy retreated into his house and held police at bay during a standoff.
After the shooting, Tacy called 911 and, according to the criminal complaint, threatened “suicide by cop” if police tried to arrest him. A SWAT response followed at the Loffert Road property. Tacy eventually surrendered without incident after several hours and was taken into custody. He was initially charged with criminal homicide and held in the Washington County jail without bond. Early reports stated that court records showed he did not have a prior criminal history.
Anderson's death left behind a family and community grieving a man remembered as a hard worker, a plumber for Cowden Plumbing, a father devoted to his two sons, and someone who loved coaching youth baseball and football, hunting, camping, golfing, riding motorcycles, and watching Pittsburgh sports. Friends described him as helpful, supportive, and deeply involved with younger people through sports. His obituary said his life was dedicated to his two boys, family, and friends.
The case moved forward in Washington County Court after Tacy waived his preliminary hearing in June 2022, sending the criminal homicide charge toward trial. Nearly four years after Anderson's death, Tacy accepted a plea agreement. In February 2026, he pleaded guilty to third-degree murder in the killing of Jerry E. Anderson. As part of the deal, he was sentenced immediately to 20 to 40 years in prison, with credit for the time he had already spent jailed since the day of the shooting. Prosecutors said Anderson's family had been consulted and agreed to the plea deal.
