On a warm spring evening in Philadelphia, the festive atmosphere of a Memorial Day weekend cookout turned to tragedy for the Parks family. Gerald 'Jerry' Parks, a 37-year-old Black male, was returning home with his 9-year-old son, Jamel Parks, on Sunday, May 29, 2022. Shortly after 10:30 p.m., as they sat in their blue 2019 Nissan Sentra on the 2100 block of Carver Street in the Wissinoming neighborhood, a hail of bullets shattered the night's peace.
Responding Philadelphia Police
officers discovered a horrific scene. Gerald was in the driver's seat, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. His young son Jamel was in the passenger seat, also having been shot several times. In a desperate attempt to save their lives, officers rushed both father and son to separate hospitals. Gerald was taken to Frankford Jefferson Hospital, and Jamel to St. Christopher's Hospital. Despite the urgent medical attention, both Gerald and Jamel succumbed to their injuries that night.
The investigation into the shooting suggests a heartbreaking case of mistaken identity. Homicide detectives believe the father and son were not the intended targets. It is thought that a dispute between men from nearby Larue and Carver Streets may have been the motive, and that the assailants mistook Gerald's car for their target's when he pulled into a newly vacant parking spot. Another vehicle pulled up alongside the Parks' car, and two gunmen fired at least 13 shots into the vehicle before fleeing the scene.
The senseless act of violence left a family and a community reeling. Gerald Parks was remembered as a loving father and the corporate manager of a local Pretzel Factory. As of now, no arrests have been made in the double homicide, and the Philadelphia Police Department continues to seek information from the public to bring those responsible to justice.
