Charles G. Stipetich, a 23-year-old male of Caucasian ethnicity from Blawnox, Pennsylvania, tragically died on July 3, 2022. He was an off-duty police officer and a former Marine who had recently joined the Oakdale Police Department. Stipetich was killed in an apparent road rage incident outside his family's home on Fountain Street in Blawnox.
The incident occurred when Kevin McSwiggen, a 40-year-old man from Pittsburgh, allegedly followed Stipetich home and got into an argument with him
and his father. According to police reports, McSwiggen confronted Stipetich and shot him during the altercation. Stipetich's father attempted to intervene, and during the confrontation, Stipetich returned fire, injuring McSwiggen.
Following the incident, McSwiggen was arrested and charged with third-degree murder. The case went to trial, and in July 2024, McSwiggen was convicted of third-degree homicide and reckless endangerment. He was sentenced to 20 to 40 years in prison for the murder and an additional six to 12 months for reckless endangerment. The judge in the case described McSwiggen's actions as unreasonably agitated over a minor traffic incident and emphasized the impact of his irrational behavior.
The Stipetich family expressed relief and gratitude for the verdict, stating that justice had been served for their son. Charles Stipetich Sr., the victim's father, thanked the prosecution team and the Allegheny County police for their efforts in bringing the case to court. The family also mentioned that they would now focus on celebrating the life and accomplishments of their son rather than mourning his loss.
