Shawn L. Grant Jr., a 16-year-old Black male from Philadelphia, was killed late on Monday, July 11, 2022, in North Philadelphia. The shooting unfolded around 11:30 p.m. near the 2800 block of West Diamond Street, in the area of North 28th Street and West Diamond Street, after police received numerous 911 calls and officers in the area heard multiple gunshots.
When Philadelphia police reached the scene, they found Shawn lying in the street or on the sidewalk, badly wounded.
He had been shot several times, with reported wounds to his side, chest, back, and legs. The officers did not wait for an ambulance; they placed him in a patrol car and rushed him to Temple University Hospital. He was unresponsive when he was found, and he was pronounced dead at the hospital at about 11:45 p.m.
Investigators described the scene as extensive and violent. Police said 63 shots had been fired from semiautomatic weapons, leaving the street covered with shell casings and evidence markers. The number of shots suggested a sustained burst of gunfire rather than a single confrontation, turning the block into a sprawling crime scene as detectives worked through the night and into the next morning.
Police reported that five males wearing dark clothing were seen heading north on Dover and Diamond Streets after the shooting. Authorities reviewed surveillance cameras in the area as part of the investigation, but public reports did not identify those males by name or announce that they had been taken into custody.
As of the available online source information, Shawn’s killing remains listed by Philadelphia police as an unsolved homicide. No public arrest, named suspect, charges, trial, or conviction could be confirmed from the available online sources. Police continued to ask anyone with information to contact the Philadelphia Police Department Homicide Unit or submit an anonymous tip.
