In the early morning hours of August 4, 2022, a burst of violence on a West Philadelphia street cut short the life of 23-year-old Derrick Blye. A Black man from the city, Blye was on Parrish Street when he was struck by multiple gunshots in a double shooting. The attack also left a 17-year-old male wounded, shot once in the neck.
Both victims were rushed to Presbyterian Medical Center.
While the teenager was listed in stable condition, Blye succumbed to his extensive injuries and was pronounced dead at 7:04 a.m. The incident added another grim statistic to the city's ongoing struggle with gun violence, leaving a community to mourn and a family to grapple with a sudden and tragic loss.
In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, Philadelphia police reported that no weapons were recovered from the scene and no arrests had been made. As of early 2026, there have been no public announcements regarding any suspects or arrests in connection with the murder of Derrick Blye, and his case remains unresolved. In a testament to his memory, a mural was later painted on Parrish Street, a colorful tribute to a life taken too soon.
