Jerry H. “J.Z.” Zehring, a 55-year-old male from Lebanon, Pennsylvania, died on November 5, 2022, during a violent shooting rampage in the rural Unityville area of Lycoming County. He had traveled there for a hunting trip and was reportedly staying at or returning to a cabin along Route 239, a remote stretch of road where hunting was common and where the morning’s violence had already spread across multiple locations.
The violence began as a domestic dispute involving 54-year-old Brian Taylor and his wife, Linda Taylor, at their home on Route 118 in Jordan Township. According to police accounts, Brian Taylor shot and killed Linda during the altercation, then fled the home armed with a rifle. As he moved away from the residence, he fired at a passing truck and made his way toward the nearby home of his sister, Andrea Meek, on Route 239. There, he shot and killed Meek as well.
After killing his wife and sister, Taylor left on an all-terrain vehicle and continued north along Route 239. During that part of the rampage, he encountered Jerry Zehring, who was described as an acquaintance of Taylor’s and a hunter in the area. Zehring was shot and died at the scene. Reports indicate that Taylor also fired at multiple homes and moving vehicles during the spree, striking vehicles and damaging property, though no additional civilians in those cars or homes were reported injured.
State police from the area were already responding after receiving reports of a shooting victim and then of a man actively firing at vehicles with a rifle. When troopers reached the scene, they found Taylor armed and still firing near the stolen ATV. A brief standoff and exchange of gunfire followed. Taylor was shot by state troopers and died at the scene. The troopers involved were not injured and were placed on administrative leave under standard procedure while the officer-involved shooting was reviewed.
There were no arrests, trial, or conviction because the identified suspect, Brian Taylor, was killed during the confrontation with police. Authorities treated the case as a triple homicide followed by the fatal police shooting of the gunman. The victims were Linda Taylor, Andrea Meek, and Jerry Zehring, with Zehring appearing to have been an unintended target caught in the path of Taylor’s escalating rampage rather than the original focus of the domestic dispute.
