Town Marshal Arthur Rutter, age 26, was shot and killed on April 28, 1907, in New Boston, Ohio. He was attempting to arrest a man who had been writing offensive letters to a woman. One of the letters suggested that she tie a string on a certain gate post if she desired to meet with him. When the man appeared at the appointed time and place, Marshal Rutter was there to meet him.
As Marshal Rutter walked up to him, the suspect drew a revolver and shot him in the head, killing him instantly.
The suspect was later discovered to be a married man who lived in the woman's neighborhood. After the shooting, the suspect fled from his home and remained at large for 28 years. He was eventually arrested in Ironton, Ohio, on March 11, 1935.
Marshal Arthur Rutter's death was a tragic event that highlighted the dangers faced by law enforcement officers in the early 20th century. His dedication to his duty and the ultimate sacrifice he made are remembered and honored by the New Boston Police Department and the community.
