Patrolman William Satters, aged 42, of the Cincinnati Police Department, was shot and killed on April 28, 1907. He was walking home after his shift when he was approached by a man who complained about another man harassing him. Satters advised the man that the harasser could be arrested. As Satters started to cross the street, the suspect pulled out a .38 caliber revolver and began firing at him without warning.
Despite being mortally wounded, Satters managed to draw his own weapon and return fire, striking the suspect five times. However, the suspect survived his injuries and was later convicted of murder and sentenced to life in prison.
Satters had served with the Cincinnati Police Department for 20 years and was survived by his wife and two children. He is buried at Spring Grove Cemetery in Cincinnati, Ohio.
The suspect was tackled by other officers before he could reload his revolver and fire any further shots. The investigation concluded with the suspect's conviction, and he remained in prison as of 1923.
