Detective Bill Brewer, a 42-year-old male of Caucasian ethnicity, was fatally shot on February 2, 2019, during a 12-hour standoff in Pierce Township, near Cincinnati, Ohio. Brewer, a 20-year veteran of the Clermont County Sheriff's Office, was responding to a call about a suicidal person when he was ambushed by the suspect, Wade Winn. Wade Winn, a 23-year-old male, was later identified as the suspect
responsible for Brewer's death. Winn had barricaded himself in his apartment and faked his own suicide, luring Brewer and other deputies into the room before opening fire on them. According to his defense attorneys, Winn was under the influence of cocaine and LSD at the time of the incident. The shooting resulted in Brewer's death and injuries to another deputy, Lt. Nick DeRose.
Following the incident, Wade Winn was charged with aggravated murder and attempted aggravated murder. He ultimately accepted a plea deal to avoid the death penalty, agreeing to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole. The plea deal also included an additional 115-year sentence for other charges. The judge cited the "callousness" of Winn's actions and the targeting of multiple law enforcement officers as reasons for the severe sentence.
