Jacob Bell, a 49-year-old male of European descent, was the sheriff of Holmes County, Ohio. On December 9, 1909, he was shot and mortally wounded while attempting to arrest Ordel E. Boley, an escapee from the Massillon State Hospital. Sheriff Bell and another deputy arrived at a home near Big Prairie to take Boley into custody.
