Eric Joering, a 39-year-old police officer in Westerville, Ohio, was tragically killed on February 10, 2018. He had been with the Westerville Police Department for 16 years, serving as a patrol officer, detective, and K-9 officer. Joering was responding to a domestic violence call when he and his fellow officer, Anthony Morelli, were shot by Quentin Smith.
Joering was shot three times, including in the head, and died at the scene.
Smith, who was prohibited from having a gun due to his criminal history, was convicted of aggravated murder and domestic violence in November 2019. He received two life sentences without the possibility of parole. In memory of Joering and Morelli, part of Interstate 270 near Westerville was renamed in their honor, and their cruiser doors were displayed in Washington D.C. as part of the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial. Joering is survived by his wife, Jami, and his three daughters, Eva, Elena, and Ella.
