Layton Steel Ridgedell, an 18-year-old male of white ethnicity from Westerville, Ohio, tragically lost his life on June 3, 2022. He was found unresponsive in a parking lot in Columbus, Ohio, and was pronounced dead at the scene. The incident occurred around 11:00 p.m. when officers responded to a report of a shooting at N. Hamilton Rd and Warner Rd.
Layton was one of two victims in this incident, the other being 15-year-old Mahky Andrews.
The investigation revealed that Layton and Mahky were shot by two teenagers, 15-year-old Terrell Hicks-Freeman and 16-year-old Baron Anderson, who were attempting to rob them. The suspects were later charged with murder. Terrell Hicks-Freeman was ordered to stand trial as an adult, facing the possibility of a life sentence.
Layton's mother, Shawna Bobst, has been vocal about seeking justice for her son. She emphasized that Layton was a good kid who was not involved in gangs or drugs and was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time. The community and police are continuing their efforts to find the suspects and bring them to justice.
Layton was remembered as a charismatic and compassionate young man who always looked out for others. His family and friends continue to mourn his loss and seek closure through the ongoing investigation and legal proceedings.
