Alfred Evans, a 35-year-old patrolman for the Youngstown Police Department, tragically lost his life on November 5, 1911. Evans was shot and killed while investigating a suspicious person at around 4:00 AM. He encountered the man on West Front Street and began questioning him. When the man was told he was going to be searched, he suddenly turned and ran. The suspect took cover behind a nearby tree and opened fire on Patrolman Evans, striking him three times.
Despite returning fire, Evans did not hit the suspect, who managed to flee the scene and was never positively identified or apprehended.
Evans was transported to a local hospital, where he succumbed to his wounds approximately eight hours later. He was survived by his wife and a 2-year-old son. The incident remains unsolved, and no arrests were made in connection with his death. The lack of identification and apprehension of the suspect has left the case unresolved to this day.
