Joan Marie Gatewood, a 16-year-old girl from Dayton, Ohio, tragically lost her life on May 24, 1975. She was the girlfriend of Russell Lee Smith, a man with a troubled past who had been arrested multiple times for various offenses, including armed robbery and auto theft. On the night of her death, Smith and Gatewood drove to a local motorcycle club where Smith intended to confront Joseph Picket, whom he suspected of dating Gatewood.
