On May 5, 1979, Melvin L. "Mel" Henze, a 28-year-old male police officer with the Cincinnati Police Department, was shot and killed while pursuing a suspect. Officer Henze, a Vietnam War veteran, had served with the department for 8 years. He was pursuing the suspect, Percy Wilson, who was wanted for felonious assault. As Henze chased Wilson in his police car, Wilson fled on foot and ambushed Henze in an alley at 1025 Naeher Street, shooting him multiple times through the open car window.
