Jeremy Heath Van Voorhis, a 47-year-old man from Dayton, was charged with Pierce's
murder. According to court documents, Van Voorhis shot Pierce on or around July 15, 2022, and then hid his body under multiple layers of flooring materials and other items in the garage. Van Voorhis was arrested after a high-speed pursuit when he attempted to evade police. He faced two counts of murder, two counts of felonious assault, and one count each of tampering with evidence and gross abuse of a corpse.
In May 2023, Van Voorhis was found guilty of the murder of his longtime friend, Clinton James "CJ" Pierce. He was sentenced to 22 years to life in prison. The court found that Van Voorhis had not only killed Pierce but also attempted to cover up the crime by hiding the body and tampering with evidence.
