Joel M. Dammann, a 27-year-old Caucasian male, was fatally shot on September 3, 2014, in an incident that began to unfold following a prearranged meeting. The events leading to his death started at a hotel on Layton Avenue in Greenfield, Wisconsin, where Dammann had planned to purchase heroin from 20-year-old Daven Dodson of Milwaukee. Accompanied by another individual, Dammann engaged in the transaction with Dodson.
Following the exchange, as Dammann drove away from the hotel, Dodson
pursued him in another vehicle. Dodson caught up to Dammann's car and was heard shouting that he had only been given $80. In an attempt to evade Dodson, Dammann began to maneuver his vehicle away. It was during this pursuit, near the area of 27th Street and Cold Spring Road, that Dodson opened fire on Dammann's car. The chase ended tragically when Dammann's vehicle crashed. He was subsequently transported to a hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. An autopsy later confirmed that Joel Dammann died from a gunshot wound to the back of his head. The passenger in Dammann's vehicle was unharmed.
The investigation into the shooting led police to identify Daven Dodson as the primary suspect. A description of his vehicle, provided by the passenger in Dammann's car, aided in his apprehension. Dodson was arrested and faced multiple charges in connection with the fatal shooting. In April 2015, Dodson reached a plea agreement, pleading guilty to a felony charge of first-degree reckless homicide. As part of the plea deal, charges of first-degree recklessly endangering safety with the use of a dangerous weapon and possession of a firearm by a felon were dismissed. He was subsequently sentenced for his role in Joel Dammann's death.
