In the early hours of a Sunday morning in January 2023, the body of Justin Michael Whitfield, a 23-year-old Black male from the Montgomery area, was found on an interstate in Fosters, Alabama. He and his acquaintance, 23-year-old Destin Rashard Holley, were the victims of a double homicide.
The investigation began around 6:15 a.m. on January 8, 2023, when a truck driver called 911 to report hitting a person on Interstate 20/59 East near mile marker 62.
The driver stopped, waited for deputies, and was fully cooperative. Responders found Justin Whitfield’s body, but evidence soon indicated that his death had occurred before he was struck by the truck. About 40 minutes later, a second call came in reporting another body lying beside nearby Frog Ridge Road. This victim was identified as Destin Holley.
Investigators with the Tuscaloosa Violent Crimes Unit quickly determined the two deaths were related homicides. They learned that a vehicle belonging to one of the victims had been located in Hayneville in Lowndes County. Inside the car, they discovered a broken window, a large amount of blood, and a projectile hole through the driver’s headrest. An investigator stated that the victims had been "discarded" in a rapid fashion after the murders.
The evidence led police to two suspects, cousins from the Montgomery and Lowndes County area. Keondre Jazel McCall and Mance Quinnell McCall Jr., both 19 years old, were arrested and charged with capital murder. According to court documents, both men confessed but gave conflicting accounts. They agreed that they were in the backseat of a car while Holley was driving and Whitfield was in the passenger seat. Keondre McCall claimed he was asleep and woke up to Mance McCall shooting both victims. Mance McCall, however, stated that he shot Holley and then shot Whitfield. He claimed that after the car came to a stop, Whitfield was still alive, and Keondre McCall then shot him, killing him.
Both Keondre Jazel McCall and Mance Quinnell McCall Jr. later pleaded guilty to murder charges. Mance McCall pleaded guilty to two counts of murder, a reduction from the initial capital murder charge. With their guilty pleas, the case is now closed.
