Deputy Sheriff Robert Michael Tanner Jr., aged 39, was shot and killed on January 8, 2002, in Zanesville, Ohio. He was on patrol when he was flagged down on Dunzweiler Drive near Kearns Drive. Tanner radioed dispatch with a license plate number to check, but he did not respond when dispatch answered back. Backup was sent, and Tanner was found by a passerby with a gunshot wound next to his vehicle.

Three suspects were apprehended later that evening during a massive search. The suspects had fled the scene but were found in a wooded area. The 28-year-old shooter pled guilty to all charges and was sentenced to life without parole. Tanner had served with the Muskingum County Sheriff's Department for eight years and is survived by his wife.
