Deputy Sheriff Robert Michael Tanner Jr., aged 39, was shot and killed on January 8, 2002, in Zanesville, Ohio. He was on patrol when he was flagged down on Dunzweiler Drive near Kearns Drive. Tanner radioed dispatch with a license plate number to check, but he did not respond when dispatch answered back. Backup was sent, and Tanner was found by a passerby with a gunshot wound next to his vehicle. His service weapon was still in its holster.
