Jeff Wellington, a 17-year-old male of African American ethnicity from Springfield, OH, tragically lost his life on April 20, 2014. Wellington was known for his love of sports, singing, and playing video games. He was an active member of his community, participating in Little Tigers Football, Dayton Avenue Baseball, AAU Basketball, and Middle School Basketball.
He also sang in the church choir and was remembered for his kind and helpful nature.
On the night of April 19, 2014, Wellington was fatally shot by Tyrin Hawkins, an 18-year-old who was 17 at the time of the incident. Wellington was attempting to mediate an argument between Hawkins and another teen when he was shot in the chest. The incident occurred early on Easter morning, and Wellington was pronounced dead at the scene.
Hawkins was later arrested and charged with aggravated murder. He pleaded guilty to the charge in January 2015 and was sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole after 33 years. A co-defendant, Kendrick Stroder, 20, also pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter and received a 10-year prison sentence. Stroder was originally indicted on more serious charges but cooperated with investigators and received a lesser sentence as part of a plea deal.
The case drew significant attention in Springfield, OH, and the community mourned the loss of a young, promising individual who was known for his willingness to help others. Wellington's family and friends continue to remember him fondly and celebrate his life and contributions to the community.
