On February 6, 2024, Richard A. Howard, a 45-year-old resident of Springfield, Ohio, was found dead inside a vehicle parked on Mason Street. The discovery was made around 1:30 p.m. when a passerby, who was walking to a nearby funeral home, noticed a man slumped over in the driver's seat and reported seeing blood in the car. Upon arrival, police confirmed that Howard had suffered a gunshot wound to the head.
The investigation quickly led to the arrest of Douglas L.
Crowley, also 45 years old and from Springfield. Crowley was apprehended shortly after the incident, with authorities linking him to the crime through surveillance footage that captured a vehicle associated with him. This vehicle was later located at the Fairfax Motel, where police found Crowley's identification inside. He reportedly admitted to being at the scene and firing a weapon at Howard.
Crowley faced multiple charges, including murder, felonious assault, and improperly discharging a firearm. The motive behind the shooting appeared to stem from a dispute between Crowley and Howard regarding ownership of the vehicle in which Howard was found dead. Following his arrest, Crowley was taken to Clark County Jail.
In October 2024, Crowley was convicted of murder and other related charges stemming from Howard's death. He received a sentence of 24 years to life in prison for his actions, which included several counts related to firearms offenses. The case highlighted issues surrounding gun violence and personal disputes within the community of Springfield.
