Jessie Daviduk, a 21-year-old male from Youngstown, OH, tragically died on September 15, 2014, after being shot in the back of the head during a drug deal gone wrong. He was taken off life support on October 2, 2014, at St. Elizabeth Health Center. The incident occurred in a van at the intersection of South and Dewey Avenues. Daviduk's death was Youngstown's 11th homicide of the year.
A 16-year-old suspect was initially held on attempted murder charges in connection with the shooting.
However, the charge was later amended to aggravated murder. The suspect, Stashawn Dates, eventually pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter, two counts of aggravated robbery, and two counts of felonious assault. Dates was sentenced to 25 years in prison.
The motive behind the shooting was believed to be robbery, as the gunman demanded everything from Daviduk during the drug deal. The van's driver, who was also present during the incident, managed to escape and drive Daviduk to the hospital before the suspect jumped out of the moving van.
Daviduk's death had a profound impact on his family and the community, leaving behind his parents, five brothers, and six sisters. His funeral was held on October 8, 2014, at the Matthew W. Conley Funeral Home, followed by interment at Forest Lawn Cemetery.
