Suliman Abdul-Mutakallim, a 39-year-old Navy veteran and devout Muslim, was tragically shot in the back of the head on June 28, 2015, while walking home from a White Castle in South Cumminsville, Cincinnati, OH. He was carrying food for himself and his wife when he was approached by three individuals, one of whom, 14-year-old Javon Coulter, shot him.
The other two accomplices, 17-year-old Valentino Pettis and an unidentified man in his 20s, were seen in a surveillance video taking money and food from Abdul-Mutakallim before fleeing the scene.
Abdul-Mutakallim was still alive when he was found face-down on the pavement, bleeding heavily. He was rushed to the University of Cincinnati Medical Center but succumbed to his injuries the next day. His wallet contained less than $60, and the crime was believed to be a robbery gone wrong.
The investigation led to the arrest of Javon Coulter and Valentino Pettis. Coulter was charged with aggravated murder, manslaughter, and robbery, while Pettis faced similar charges. Both cases began in juvenile court but were later transferred to common pleas court. Coulter, who had a history of violent behavior, was deemed competent to stand trial despite mental health issues. Pettis also faced trial for his involvement in the crime.
In a remarkable display of forgiveness, Suliman's mother, Rukiye Abdul-Mutakallim, hugged both Coulter and his mother during court proceedings, expressing her desire to help them become better people. She has since advocated for changes in parole laws, believing that young offenders deserve a chance at redemption.
The case highlighted the tragic consequences of youth violence and the potential for rehabilitation and forgiveness. Despite the loss of her son, Rukiye Abdul-Mutakallim remains committed to helping others and preventing similar tragedies in the future.
