On October 29, 2016, in Toledo, Ohio, 3-year-old African American male, Ty-Ryne Lamarr Hoskins, was tragically shot and killed in his home. The incident occurred around 1 p.m. on the 100 block of Rockingham Street near Cherry Street. Authorities reported that a 7-year-old child accidentally discharged a firearm, resulting in a fatal gunshot wound to Ty-Ryne's torso. Despite immediate medical attention, Ty-Ryne was pronounced dead at a local hospital.
At the time of the shooting, several adults were present in the residence. Investigators focused on determining how the 7-year-old accessed the firearm. An autopsy confirmed that Ty-Ryne died from a gunshot wound to the torso.
In the aftermath, prosecutors decided not to file charges against the 7-year-old involved in the shooting. However, a 15-year-old relative of Ty-Ryne faced charges of complicity to negligent homicide and failure to secure firearms. Authorities alleged that this teenager owned the gun that was used in the incident.
Ty-Ryne is survived by his mother, Lakwanda Brown; brothers, Tyrone III and Tyronne Hoskins; sisters, Tylasia Hoskins and Onesty Carter; grandparents, Tyrone Hoskins Sr. and James Brown; as well as other extended family members. Funeral services were held in early November 2016, with interment at Historic Woodlawn Cemetery in Toledo.
This tragic event underscores the critical importance of firearm safety and secure storage, especially in homes with children, to prevent such devastating accidents.
