On the evening of January 6, 2025, 18-year-old African American male Derrick Rogers was fatally shot in a parking lot at 3300 Arlington Avenue in south Toledo, Ohio. Responding to a 'shots fired' call around 9:30 p.m., Toledo police officers discovered Derrick Rogers deceased at the scene, having sustained multiple gunshot wounds. The Lucas County Coroner's Office later confirmed the cause of death as homicide due to multiple gunshot wounds.
Simultaneously, officers stopped a vehicle driving erratically near the intersection of Byrne Road and Hill Avenue. Inside, they found 20-year-old African American male Jayden Bush suffering from at least one gunshot wound. He was transported to the University of Toledo Medical Center and was expected to survive his injuries.
Subsequent investigations led to the arrest of 20-year-old Jaylin Tyler, who was charged with murder and felonious assault in connection with the incident. Court documents revealed that Derrick Rogers had arranged to meet with Tyler in the parking lot, where he was ambushed by several individuals who ultimately shot and killed him. Tyler was arrested on May 6, 2025, by the U.S. Marshals-led Northern Ohio Violent Fugitive Task Force at a residence in the 5100 block of Secor Road in Toledo.
Following his arrest, Tyler was arraigned in Toledo Municipal Court, where a judge set his bond at $1 million. He is scheduled to return to court for further proceedings. The investigation into the involvement of additional suspects in the ambush and shooting of Derrick Rogers is ongoing.
Derrick Rogers was a senior at Skyway Career Prep High School, known for his love of basketball and football. He was remembered by friends and family as a young man with a radiant smile and a great sense of humor.
